City Ordinances regarding Pets:

It is unlawful for a dog to run loose anywhere in Georgetown.

Many people make the incorrect assumption that it is okay for them to turn their dog loose to play in the City's parks. Allowing a dog off leash anywhere within the City limits of Georgetown is a violation of City Code and subject to fines of over a hundred dollars. This is enforced at all times in the City's parks.

Animal Services enforces City Code relating to animals.

State law and City Code require people with animals in their care to provide them with adequate food and water and with adequate shelter from the elements as well as any other care that is required to prevent suffering or other health problems for the animals. Failure to provide these things is a violation of the law.

Leaving a pet unattended inside a vehicle for even a short time can be a life threatening danger to a pet and may well be illegal depending upon weather conditions. Please leave pets at home whenever possible.

Free roaming cats that cause a nuisance while off the premises of their owners are in violation of City Code and can be impounded or their owners can be fined for a code violation.

Any person who provides food, water and or shelter for a cat or dog for 10 days is considered legally responsible for the animal and its actions whether they claim ownership or not.

All cats and dogs in the State of Texas are required by law to be vaccinated against Rabies Virus every year, once they become 3 months of age.

Barking Dogs:
City of Georgetown Code of Ordinance
Sec. 7.05.140. Excessive noise.
A. Any person who shall harbor or keep on his premises, or in or about his premises under his control, any animal which by loud, continual or unusual noise of any kind which shall cause the peace and quiet of the neighborhood or the occupant of adjacent premises to be disturbed shall be guilty of a Class "C" misdemeanor and a separate offense shall be deemed committed upon each day during or on which such violation occurs or continues.

B. Enforcement of excessive noise violation will consist of a citation to Municipal Court issued by an authorized representative of Animal Services to the person in violation after receiving a signed written statement clearly identifying the person complaining that the noise is disturbing them and clearly describing the nature of the disturbance. A citation will be issued to the animal owner if an authorized representative of Animal Services deems the noise described in the written statement to be a violation of this section.
